Greetings Ghostgoths!
We are in the thick of preparing for the Emerald Gothic Weekender, which promises to be a solid 3 days of cultural bliss.
On Friday September 8th we feature four bands in the genre, but coming from different places. The first is a band called The Bitter Ends, a group that covers gothic favorites including Sisters Of Mercy, The Cure, and other songs to learn and sing. The second is Black Woofer, whose electronic-industrial work has earned him a following among listeners who hear semblances of Skinny Puppy and Front 242. The third delight is Black Magdalene, an organic darkwave group that presents beauty for the eye and ear. And lastly, we have The Secret Light from Portland, a well-loved band that will take you back to the 80’s while leaving you satisfied with their thoroughly modern sound. The cover for all four of these bands is a mere $7!
Saturday September 9th starts out with the Dark Arts Market, a floating market of all things dark and unusual. Our vendors include well known artists including Aunia Kahn, jewelers creating wonderful adornments, bone collectors redistributing the cellular wealth of the world, soap makers and perfumers to delight the senses, tarot vendors and readers, and other delights too numerous to name. The market runs from 1-6 PM and all ages are welcome at the outside vendors- however the inner market is open only to adults with ID (21+). There is no admission charge but please bring either a nominal donation for our charity table, or a can of food for Food For Lane County.
September 9th Evening is a classic Ghost House with one of our favorite DJs, Non from Portland, who has superlative taste. Abulikah will bring his vintage, rare vinyl collection out to play and Refugium will be on hand. $3 cover, 21+. The dancing starts at 9 and there will be prizes for Best Goth, Best Deathrock, and Best Victorian Dress. These prizes are not gender specific and one prize will be given at midnight for each category.
Sunday September 10th is a day of passive entertainment with beloved antique silent films paired with new soundtracks. We will feature The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari starting at 630 PM with a soundtrack by In The Nursery. It will be followed by Nosferatu with a new soundtrack assembled and mixed by DJ Refugium. This is likely to be a one-time performance. Lastly there will be a showing of The Golem with a soundtrack by Frank Black of the Pixies. There will be a cover charge of $3 which goes to charity.
In point of fact, while Friday’s cover will go to the bands that so richly deserve it, and Saturday’s dance night cover will go to the DJs, a portion of all of the money raised by this weekend will go to a nonprofit of some kind. In March we raised money for many nonprofits, including Bat Conservation International in support of our small furry flying friends. Quite simply we love creating events like this but we aren’t greedy people. What we don’t need will be given freely to those who have a greater need.
If you can’t make it to this weekend, the next regular night will be on October 14th and will feature the fabulous DJ Owen, to whom you will dance- it’s not even a choice. So mark the calendar for that night as well!
