Eugene Gothic Weekend

We are very excited to bring back Eugene Gothic Weekend next May! It was a huge success last September and March. We have some truly excellent bands and DJs lined up for you, along with the return of the Dark Arts Market!

Ghost House will be on FRIDAY instead of Saturday and we are featuring three ladies of Goth. In addition to DJ Refugium you’ll hear selections from DJ Nervosa (Seattle, Baltic Room and Mercury) and also DJ Skully from Portland (Hive).

The Dark Arts Market will take place on SATURDAY from 1-6 PM. It is all ages in the parking lot and 21+ in the venue, in accordance with OLCC rules. This event is free. We have a plethora of artisans and merchants bringing goods from far and wide for your perusal. Everything from bones to stones to books to tarot decks will be represented.

Friday night are four Oregon bands that represent a variety of sounds across the genre. Starting at 7 is Black Woofer, local synthetic industrial. He’ll be followed by The Bitter Ends, covering a variety of classics with some original material as well. Next up will be Vibrissae from Portland with their beautiful electronic shoegaze. And to close out the night, we are excited to welcome The Xploding Boys. This Cure cover band is spot on and will delight us by playing the entire Head On The Door album for a start! Plan to join us and stay up late!

Advance wristbands for the weekend get you into both Friday and Saturday for just $10! You can buy them using paypal here, or at the April Ghost House from the djs. It will be $12 at the door for both, so save a few bucks by buying in advance.

We’re baaaack….

Actually we never left, just got busy.

I always have the best of intentions with blogs, only to find that I can’t stick with it. That said, there is all kinds of information and quite a community on Facebook if you’re interested in what we are up to.

At this point I want to reframe this page a bit to be less the face of Ghost House, although it can’t help but be, and a bit more about the music that is Goth (and sometimes industrial, deathrock, shoegaze, post-punk*, you get the idea).

To that end I’m going to start sticking up music and book reviews when I see fit, and also a sort of rolling concert calendar. I may not link to all the events or albums I list, but that is what Google is for. Hope you all like it.

EMERALD GOTH WEEKEND MAY 11TH AND 12TH
This is huge and deserves its own post. If you want to vend at the Dark Arts Market on Saturday, here is the link to the registration form:

More details about the market are in the form.

And more to come!

*BTW, I think post-punk is as stupid a "genre" as you can get because everything is now post-punk. I mean, seriously- Punk is still not dead but it's definitely in it's 40's right about now and should start exercising and cutting down on the fun stuff. Katy Perry is technically post-punk, so is Hansen. That's why I don't use the term much, it's meaningless. Just my opinion!

Autumnal update

Greetings Ghostgoths!

We are in the thick of preparing for the Emerald Gothic Weekender, which promises to be a solid 3 days of cultural bliss.

On Friday September 8th we feature four bands in the genre, but coming from different places. The first is a band called The Bitter Ends, a group that covers gothic favorites including Sisters Of Mercy, The Cure, and other songs to learn and sing. The second is Black Woofer, whose electronic-industrial work has earned him a following among listeners who hear semblances of Skinny Puppy and Front 242. The third delight is Black Magdalene, an organic darkwave group that presents beauty for the eye and ear. And lastly, we have The Secret Light from Portland, a well-loved band that will take you back to the 80’s while leaving you satisfied with their thoroughly modern sound. The cover for all four of these bands is a mere $7!

Saturday September 9th starts out with the Dark Arts Market, a floating market of all things dark and unusual. Our vendors include well known artists including Aunia Kahn, jewelers creating wonderful adornments, bone collectors redistributing the cellular wealth of the world, soap makers and perfumers to delight the senses, tarot vendors and readers, and other delights too numerous to name. The market runs from 1-6 PM and all ages are welcome at the outside vendors- however the inner market is open only to adults with ID (21+). There is no admission charge but please bring either a nominal donation for our charity table, or a can of food for Food For Lane County.

September 9th Evening is a classic Ghost House with one of our favorite DJs, Non from Portland, who has superlative taste. Abulikah will bring his vintage, rare vinyl collection out to play and Refugium will be on hand. $3 cover, 21+. The dancing starts at 9 and there will be prizes for Best Goth, Best Deathrock, and Best Victorian Dress. These prizes are not gender specific and one prize will be given at midnight for each category.

Sunday September 10th is a day of passive entertainment with beloved antique silent films paired with new soundtracks. We will feature The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari starting at 630 PM with a soundtrack by In The Nursery. It will be followed by Nosferatu with a new soundtrack assembled and mixed by DJ Refugium. This is likely to be a one-time performance. Lastly there will be a showing of The Golem with a soundtrack by Frank Black of the Pixies. There will be a cover charge of $3 which goes to charity.

In point of fact, while Friday’s cover will go to the bands that so richly deserve it, and Saturday’s dance night cover will go to the DJs, a portion of all of the money raised by this weekend will go to a nonprofit of some kind. In March we raised money for many nonprofits, including Bat Conservation International in support of our small furry flying friends. Quite simply we love creating events like this but we aren’t greedy people. What we don’t need will be given freely to those who have a greater need.

If you can’t make it to this weekend, the next regular night will be on October 14th and will feature the fabulous DJ Owen, to whom you will dance- it’s not even a choice. So mark the calendar for that night as well!
